I had a friend who decided to move to Chicago from the south. To say that he was surprised is an understatement. I asked him why he moved to Chicago. He said that he wanted to be close to his family and friends. After some more thought, he said that he wanted to be close to his cellco partnership. In other words, he wanted the best.
Verizon Wireless is a major player in the wireless market in Chicago. They own the cellco’s and the cellco’s are the second largest wireless carrier. And as we learned in the video, their partnership is a major player in the wireless market, with VeriCell providing services to the city’s public schools.
It’s easy to see how Verizon could get a huge amount of attention for their partnership. However, there’s an interesting side to the story. One of the other partnerships Verizon is part of is Cellco Partnership, which has been around since 2005. In order to do business in Chicago, one has to be a Verizon Wireless customer, which means that Verizon has a lot of leverage with Cellco.
I can’t figure out how to describe this piece of news, but it’s interesting because in the beginning of the video, the phone user was calling me from my home in Waltham, MA. One of the others from that call was a guy named Mike, who was with the company. He was talking to me from the phone, and he said, “I’ve got a problem with this phone.
Verizon is a big company. Verizon Wireless is a subsidiary of Verizon Communications, which consists of the Verizon phone companies (Verizon, Frontier, and some others). The Verizon Wireless brand is very recognizable to all of us in Chicago, and we were really excited when Verizon announced that they would be offering cellular service in Chicago.
My first reaction was, “That’s a great idea!” And then I thought, “Wait, I wonder why Mike said that?” He was probably telling me the story of why he was looking for a phone to use with Verizon Wireless. I knew the company’s brand, and the reason they were offering cellular service was because of the fact that the company was trying to increase its market share (at least in Chicago).
Verizon is a brand that’s already used by one of the largest wireless service providers in the United States, AT&T. With the launch of the Verizon Wireless service, they were looking to increase their market share and in Chicago, they were already looking to expand their brand. But it was clear to me that Mike knew more about the company than I did.
Verizon was actually talking to Mike in the summer of 2012 when he was looking for a wireless provider to offer a high speed fiber optic network as a competitor to the wireless networks AT&T and T-Mobile were offering. This was part of Verizon’s plan to extend its already high fiber optic network to Chicago and offer cellular service as well.
Verizon has a wireless network with a lot of fiber fiber connections in Chicago. It also has a lot of cell towers in Chicago. And Mike was the only guy who knew more about the company than I did.
Mike is an extremely intelligent businessman who has been interested in wireless communications for quite some time. He has just recently purchased a company, Verizons Wireless, which he operates as a business under the Verizons brand. Mike’s new company has just announced that it will provide wireless services to Chicago, including cell service and a high-speed fiber optic network called Verizons Fiber.
